When I came as a refugee to the United States in 1985, I felt I was granted a second life. I discovered what free time was: free from standing endlessly in food lines (lines of our survival in Rumania), free to have enough light in the evenings and to have heat during the cold winter.
I did the first sketch for E Pluribus Unum on the 3rd of July 1986. It came naturally as a gift of the new life I had discovered in coming here. Several versions followed and one of them won the prize in the Millbrae Art Competition dedicated to the Bicentennial of the Constitution in 1987.
To me E Pluribus Unum is three-dimensional. There are many rows of people behind and before the one drawn here. If you look hard you can find yourself somewhere in there, for each of us has a meaningful place under the stars. . .
